It used to be relatively easy to review a new phone. You would mention the super-duper 1.3MP camera, the external screen, and that it could make phone calls. Ahh, but the game has changed, has it not? Now we have sleek touchscreens, sophisticated haptic keyboards, interesting and fun UI’s, and so on. In other words, at some point reviewing phones became a real good time. I’m having fun.

So it is with the Samsung Instinct. This is another in a series of anxiously awaited devices, and like the, it does not disappoint. The Instinct is a sleek powerhouse capable of satisfying the cell phone shopper of today. It has all the necessary ingredients, including a full and true touchscreen fascia, 3G speeds, 2.0MP camera and video recorder, able to send your email directly to your phone, haptic feedback to add certainty and assuredness to your every touch, etc. This phone is what cell phones have become: powerful, easy-to-use devices that no longer insult the buyer with silly interfaces or low-end resolution screens. While many touchscreens compare themselves to the iPhone, you must keep in mind that there is more to it than just the touchscreen. The Instinct’s drawback, one of only a few, is a “rough and go” browser experience, due in part because it simply does not have the same engine as the iPhone.

Also, in trying to achieve a small form factor, the Instinct became so small that typing becomes cramped and challenging at times. Still and all, If you are like many phone shoppers looking for a powerful touchscreen phone, you simply must include this on your list. The Samsung Instinct is no iPhone, nor is it an iPhone killer. It is, however, an amazingly feature packed touch based phone with a reasonable user interface. It has many highlights that are going to thrill a lot of users, and it still manages to offer a lot of visual bang for the buck when it comes to impressing your friends.

And while I am very pleased with the on-screen QWERTY keyboard it offers, I am even more impressed by its voice based Live Search functionality. This is what it is about - easy access to information while on the go. It isn't without its flaws, and I do find it to be more cumbersome to use than it ought to be, but I still think there are going to be many people that will be floored by this phone.

I give it a solid 'Recommended' rating. And considering the cut-throat price that Sprint is offering it at, I expect it to continue to fly off of the shelves for some time to come. To call the Samsung Instinct an iPhone knockoff would be an understatement of grotesque proportions. Seriously: Even the packaging looks like it came straight outta Cupertino. With its buttonless face and black monolithic look, the all-touchscreen Instinct is immediately familiar: It's virtually the same weight and size as the iPhone, only about two-tenths of an inch narrower. Most of the expected specs for any 2008 handset are here: 3G, GPS, 2-megapixel camera (with video recording), and full e-mail and web browsing features. But the Instinct doesn't stop there; it tries to stake a claim on new ground by adding features its arch rival (even the upcoming version) skips: Haptic feedback buzzes below your fingertip when you work the touchscreen, and voice control lets you do certain tasks sans typing. This cell is a POS. I've had two.

I'm never buying another one of these. The back breaks off too easy. It drops calls all the time (low receptivity), I can't download drivers for it, I can't connect it to my laptop, Samsung Kies doesn't support it, it locks up during voicemail calls, it locks up when I check my texts, it scrolls all over the place when my ear is on it during a call, the touch screen is finicky when i try texting, It Sucks! Don't ever buy this cell. I give it a 1 out of 10 because at least it's better than nothing. These phones are pretty useless for making phone calls.Very poor connectivity in a high bandwidth are.Forget about web.Reminds me of the old 300 baud modem.Slow very slow and crashes all the time. Can read screen under normal daylight.Full brightness is set.

Sprint never made good on the phone features promised. No Apps for this phone.Only Sprint made apps which generally stink. Just a plain poor way over priced piece of plastic. Worth about $5 at best.Wouldn't take another if they were free!

Pros: Durable touchscreen for HTML web-browsing, texting, photos, and phone calls. Cons: Can be a bit sluggish at times, lacks 3G and WiFi.

Overall: While I wouldn't call it a smart phone, it is pretty darn close. This phone has the best of both worlds: quality phone calls and texting abilities integrated well with multimedia staples including a converter calculator, calendar, radio, MP3 player, Facebook, YouTube, and video/camera capabilities, for an overall fantastic experience. I've owned this phone for over a year and I can say it is one of the best phones I have ever owned. Great for multimedia, this phone includes music via SD card (up to 8 GB), downloadable games, and a 2 MP camera which often looks better than expected. Speakers are OK, but invest in a good set of headphones and you've got yourself a quality MP3 player. You can add Live TV, GPS, and Internet browsing for an extra fee, depending on what you use it for, but be warned the internet can be a bit slow at times even in urban areas. I use this phone mostly for texting.

It has a full-qwerty keyboard, which can be switched from 2 hands to 1, and can be used with gloves on (great for Canadian winters!). My only complaint is that the keys are a little too small, even for someone with small fingers (though it does come with a stylus, but nowhere to put it), and it can be a pain to fix spelling errors using the touchscreen, but you do get used to it. Call quality is decent, not top-notch, but clear and loud enough for the average user. Speaker phone is quite good, as is the integrated Bluetooth.

I've used my phone with GMC's OnStar and it has always worked great. Button scheme is perfect. Volume, camera, and voice command are perfectly placed (for a right-handed individual anyway), and the lock button was well integrated. The touch button on the front need to be pressed a bit harder than the actual touchscreen but again this is something you get used to.

I've known a few people who have owned this phone and had problems with buggy software and freezing issues, but I've never had either. I've dropped it on numerous occasions and it still keeps kicking. Screen is fairly scratch resistant, as is the rubbery back, but the steel edge can chip easily. I've been a loyal LG phone user until buying the Samsung Instinct. At first I was not the biggest fan of the phone for the following reasons: - no signature (no big deal) - privacy issues (phone displays a portion of incoming text and name/number of caller) - I initially found it tricky to unlock the screen (I kept shutting the phone down) Once I got used to these minor annoyance I started to really love my phone!!!

I love the touch screen and full Qwerty keyboard. I'm with Sasktel and it's a definite bonus that I can surf the web without additional charges. I've never had inbox or messaging issues and find texting extremely easy (what I use phone for the most). I've had my phone for almost 2 years and never had to take it in for repair. Until Sasktel supports the iPhone I will stick with my Instinct!!! I have had this phone for 11 months.

It has been sent away to be repaired three times. The web browser won't connect on a regular basis, text messages come in under the wrong sender name, it freezes while checking voicemail and I can't turn it off so I have to take out the battery to turn it off when it freezes, continual error messages when trying to use the web browser and camera isn't the greatest. I really want to love this phone because when it does work (which is a rare occurrence) I do love it. I love the touch screen, the battery life is good. I know three other people with the same phone and they all have problems with theirs too. I have had enough with mine and am getting a new phone because my warranty on the Instinct is up in a month and I can't afford to send it away all the time to be repaired because it breaks down on a regular basis. Ive had this phone for a year, and although it is expensive, i like it.

Pros: - ive dropped in NUMEROUS times. Although the siding chips very easily, nothing happens to the phone internally, or the screen. internet is very fast - i havent even experienced a full inbox. It never gets full, its amazing. the phone can go very loud, and it rings for a long time, which is handy if you've got a huge purse and need to find it.

i use the alarm clock daily, it never ' doesnt ring ' like other phones. many settings to change the phone to your desire.:) Cons: - you cannot send a text more than 140 characters. Its not like the other phones where you type as much as you need, and it sends it in separate messages. With this phone, you need to send it, ( stopping in the middle of a sentence or word ) then start another text, finishing off your comment. I found this very annoying.

the music application isnt the greatest if it works. But mine doesnt even work anymore. When i touch the music thing, it says that there's an error. the GPS is useless.

Of course, that could be because of my provider. ( which, by the way, NEVER get bell.

Samsung Instinct

They'll take any money you've got. ) - it goes on the internet in your pocket, which sucks if you dont have a data internet plan. the camera only takes good pictures in nice lighting.

Does not have flash. is a pretty large & heavy phone.

has lots of features, that no one ever uses, so it jacks up the price. All in all, i dont hate it or love it. I do, however, hate bell. NEVER go to bell.

I am switching my phone in a few days, to a new provider, due to size and the fact that i dont like touch screens anymore. CDMA: 800/1900 MHz Data: 1xRTT, EV-DO Rev.
