There's hundreds of excellent mods for Oblivion, but IMO, the the most crucial is. There was an excellent oblivion mod thread at EvAv. Beware, combinations of mods can be unstable, but most issues can be worked out.

Tried finding the same sites that have helped me in the past, but my google skills are failing me at the moment. Regardless, OOO is the only gameplay mod needed, imo. Anything else will be more or less cosmetic. Don't know much about Morrowind mods as I only played it once at launch. I spent two frackin weeks going through all the major game mods and character mods, installing, uninstalling, updating and reinstalling finding broken mods and uninstalling again then finding better versions and reinstalling. I finally got everything to where I thought it was as good as it was going to get played for a week then got distracted by all the new games this quarter. In hind site I really wish I would have kept a small journal of everything to help others out.

Let me go through what I have and I kept them in any reasonable order and I'm not feeling to lazy (or the call of FO3) I will try to put together a small guide for you. I also spent a lot of time on the following 3 sites. I use which has leveled items and creatures. It's very similar to OOO, except everything in it is modular and can be changed on the fly within the game by using a menu. For example, it lets me select leveled creatures and loot, but lets me keep the original static economy since I don't really want to futz around with 'realistic' in-game markets. You can also add new items and monsters that come with the file. Fun fact: in OOO 1.33 - which is the latest version as far as I can tell, you gotta search around just to find it - the 'living' economy stuff is also modular, not even included by default in the full version.

Quote: Fixes Unofficial Oblivion Patch.must have. This fixes everything bethesda was too lazy to fix themselves. It's a definite must (remember to update with the official patch before patching again with this) Graphics Mods Fake HDR Lighting - I can't stand not having anti-aliasing, yet the world is so bland without having HDR. This allows it so it can have both, without having to worry about compatibility issues. Another neat feature is that this will work on most graphics cards, whether they have HDR capabilities or not! Graphics Tweaks Cities Alive at Night - This makes it so when you are outside of a town, it doesn't look dead and buried. Now you can see lights inside the town at night when you are outside it Brighter Torches - This just doubles the light given off by torches.

Better Bodies

It makes dungeons much nicer, and makes sneaking considerably harder if you use the sneaking balance mod. Darker Mods Pack - Specifically I am using the Kvatch Burning mod from this. All this does is have Kvatch burning from the outside, to give less of a jar. A small mod, but nice to have Get Wet - This determines when it is raining, or when someone has been swimming, and gives them a bit of a shine and have some water droplets spawn on them. This creates an EQ2-style wet scenario Natural Environments.Must Have. This does SO much to the environment! This quadruples the amount of weather effects available, makes nights, water and vegetation look actually real, adds rainbows (yay!) and critters, and it is really a must have.

It completely changes the outdoors interface BT Mod.Must Have. This basically does away with all of the console modifications of the game.

It recreates the UI to take full advantage of the higher resolutions of the game, and makes seeing everything a whole lot easier no more 'how many' - This is a really simple mod, just removes the confirmation message. This will help get up merchantile slightly faster, and more importantly saves a whooole lot of frustration Texture Replacements Ayleid Ruins - This mod replaces the decrepit look of the ruins with a more archaic and refined look. This is just a matter of preference really, both look great. I just think that ancient and superior ruins should look superior Beautiful Stars - A simple texture replacement that makes the stars look a lot better Book Jackets - This one is a pretty spectacular mod, their goal is to give a unique jacket to every kind of book in the game. Some of them look really good, and it adds quite a bit Better Wine - adds different wine bottle textures that do look better. However, this uses archiveinvalidation, which I have no idea how to use. I don't even know if I have this working or not.

Texture Mods - This replaces most of the close-up environment textures, which makes the world on the whole look a lot better Color Map Mod - A small mod that changes the black and white map to color Landscape LOD Replacement - This doubles the resolution of the far-away landscapes, making them quite a bit more detailed. I suggest a high-memory (256 or 512) graphics card to use this Border LOD Replacement - this does the same thing as the previous, but instead of the landscape it does the map borders (what you can see past the part where you can't go) Illumination Within - This allows all the windows at night to glow, to make a truly more lively town at night. Content University Revamped - This recreates the arcane university to look quite a bit better. Silgrad - a faithful recreation of some of the great game of Morrowind, a gigantic mod for Oblivion that creates an entirely original area to explore and quest.

Dungeons Blackrock Mountain - I haven't gone here yet, but more dungeons are always good! Lair of the Hydra - same as before, the more content the better! Even if I haven't seen it yet The Tower of the Lich King - sounds like fun Gameplay.Note. This is the part where conflicts might become a nuisance.
