According to the results I get using the 'search' function there is no open thread on Spacemen 3.I would make the case that Sound of Confusion is their best album, although not many agree with me.This is perhaps my favorite Spacemen 3 song, 'Losing Touch With My Mind':partially I think for the extrinsic reason that it's the first song on their first album. And also because I see them categorized as 'space rock' and for a long time that made no sense to me at all, because of the order in which I got into them, beginning with Playing With Fire which isn't really space rock at all. This album doesn't get the praise the next two do, so I didn't get it until I started to be more of a fan and wanted everything. But it's easily as good as the second album and in many ways better than the third. And it has space rock sounds on it, that wooshy woosh stuff is very space rock. But what I most like about it is the groove-they have their own groove and this is where it is most prominent probably. But they're also one of the only bands who can do covers that are just as satisfying as their originals.

I doubt you'll get many agreeing with you that they peaked with Sound of Confusion, but for what it's worth I do love that album.

To me, it is what metal should sound like- bludgeoning, unrelenting, the kind of thing that used to make my dad think I was a mental case when I played it.For some reason, most fans think the Northampton demos (Taking Drugs to Make Music.) are better than the album itself. Not sure that I agree. The truth is, I don't have a favorite Spacemen 3 record. They are all so different and all the core releases are equally essential to me: not just Perfect Prescription and Playing with Fire, but also Dreamweapon and Performance are total classics of my high school years. (At the time, it was quite hard to get ahold of Recurring, which is just as good but a different kind of mood.)And some of the non-LP tracks like 'Starship' and 'That's Just Fine' will never escape my brain.

Great to see a Spacemen 3 thread on here! That band and it's offshoots (esp. Spectrum, Spiritualized and E.A.R.) have been a big part of my life and certainly led me in different directions once I got into them (around the time of Playing With Fire). I have to go with The Perfect Prescription as my favourite if I have to pick.

But all the LPs are pretty fantastic. And yes, Translucent Flashbacks is a great comp. I also enjoyed the unofficial Losing Touch With Your Mind.
