So, The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin turns 10 years old this year. I think we can all agree that it's not only one of the best Flaming Lips albums (if not THE best), but it was also one of the best records of the 90s. This isn't open for discussion. So.after hearing bits a pieces of the new Lips record scheduled to hit or 'drop' later this year, I decided to revisit my favorite Lips album. Little did I know that I had been mislead all these years. One of my biggest criticisms of the original release was it's re-use of certain songs.

For some reason it just never sat with me well. I'd understand if these should be considered bonus tracks.but they still felt like left-overs, and unnecessary. For a music geek like myself.they ruined the album 'experience' that I crave.

So all these years, I argued that while Soft Bulletin had the better songs.Yoshimi was the better 'album'. Don't worry I love'm both. Until just yesterday when I decided to do a little more research.

I remember hearing that the record company (Warner Bros.) was unhappy with the way Soft Bulletin had turned out.and had 'remixed' a lot of songs on the record. What I didn't know is that they also messed with the original tracklisting. Did you know the classic 'Spiderbite Song' isn't even on the U.K. Release of Soft Bulletin? Another track 'Slow Motion' isn't on the US version.

Who made that call? Not The Flaming Lips. In 2006 The Lips re-released The Soft Bulletin original studio tracks as they were meant to be heard, put them in the order they were meant to be listed, and thankfully took off all the extra tracks that were completely unnecessary. If you look on the Flaming Lips website.the tracklisting for the soft bulletin is of the 'demastered' release.not the US or UK CDs. The result is the DEFINITIVE version of the album.and one I hadn't heard until this morning. Let me just say, I fell in love with the album ALL over again. Not only do the 'original' studio tracks sound great, in a lot of ways they are superior.

I won't spoil all the little moments.but let's just say Buggin is a LOT different, and in my opinion a LOT better. I always found the remixed version a little cartoony. It also works very well as an album closer. So enough words.here is a link to help share the experience. For the 10th birthday of The Soft Bulletin, shouldn't you celebrate by actually listening to the actual studio album.and not the after thought of the record companies? The Soft Bulletin is their best record.and this release pretty much seals it for me. Click to expand.well not every track on the album was remixed.

Just 4 or 5 songs. So I wouldn't expect your mind to be blown. It's Still this most complete tracklisting.

You did notice there is a totally new track 'slow motion' that wasn't even on the US release right? I think the re-release does a better job of making The Soft Bulletin a more cohesive album. Not everyone (including myself) had heard the 'boot' of the unmastered tracks before.which was kind of the point of the whole thread.

This was released by the band, not some fan. Great, glad you guys are as surprised as I was. I had no idea until this week. I always thought the extra remixes of Superman and Race for The Prize were put on the album as some sort of bonus for the fans. I think you'll realize after hearing the re-released version they are completely un-needed. Who wants to hear the same song twice on one album?

It totally takes me out of the element. Also.Slow Motion.a song I never heard.is awesome! Why would they take that track off, but add additional remixes? Those poor UK folks are even missing out on The Spiderbite Song!!that is such a shame, since it's one of my favs on the album.

To clear up some confusion on when this was released.it was part of the 5.1 DVD Audio package. The DVD-A came with a Stereo CD mix.

They are supposed to release a Vinyl version too. Not sure when that's coming out, it was supposed to be out for Record Store Day. I may wait to putrchase that instead.

Once again, if you go on the Lips website you will see the 'official' tracklisting is of the re-released album, not the original CD we know and loved. Personally, I don't think I will ever listen to that version ever again. Yoshimi is very good album but it was still fairly disappointing after Soft Bulletin. Don't know how you could've thought it was better for any extended period of time. Ending the album with Buggin' of all things? Eh, not feeling it at all.

I'm gunna take Warner's side on this one. Superman through Sleeping on the Roof are fantastic and were the perfect end for the album. This just makes Spiderbite and Buggin feel like unnecessary bonus tracks to me. Slow Motion is the only point to this and I added that on my own long ago. Click to expand.yeah, but the original album didn't end with Sleeping on the Roof.it ended with repeated songs.which wreaks much more of bonus tracks then this.

Also.I think after Feeling yourself and Sleeping.going back to an upbeat mood is great. I think it brings the album full circle. I also like Slow Motion as track 4 more then I liked the Spiderbite song as track 4. Buggin is much more sinister sounding on this release.much better IMO. Now that I looks at it.the vinyl tracklisting is pretty awesome edit Vinyl release Side one 'Race for the Prize' 'A Spoonful Weighs a Ton' 'The Spark That Bled' 'The Spiderbite Song' Side two 'Buggin' (The Buzz of Love Is Busy Buggin' You) – 3:16 'What Is the Light?'

'The Observer' Side three 'Waitin' for a Superman' 'Suddenly Everything Has Changed' 'The Gash' Side four 'Slow Motion' – 3:53 'Feeling Yourself Disintegrate' 'Sleeping on the Roof'. My first introduction (aside from 'She Don't Use Jelly' yeeaaarrrssss ago) was 'Yoshimi,' which I thought was overhyped as hell (and has since grown on me some- I love 'Fight Test' and 'Ego Tripping.'

- but still not to the point where I would agree with the consensus opinion at the time), so I figured this band was probably not my cup o' tea. I mean, they're not bad. This was a pleasant enough album on the first listen ('Buggin' did seem like a strange closer. I was just getting into it, and then album over). I guess I just have a pretty low threshold for goofiness. Click to expand.I tagged them myself.the only track doesn't have the correct sub-title is What Is The Light, which was just too long to type out. I got the track listing from here.

You can delete the subtitles if you wish, I was just trying to be as accurate to the actual CD linear notes as possible. Or if you want to keep the sub-title here is the one for What is the Light: 'What Is the Light? (An Untested Hypothesis Suggesting That the Chemical In Our Brains By Which We Are Able to Experience the Sensation of Being in Love Is the Same Chemical That Caused the 'Big Bang' That Was the Birth of the Accelerating Universe)'. I have to admit that this has grown steadily on me, and I'm listening to it like every day this week. Something about these dudes (or maybe just Coyne's voice) still grates me, but the overall sonic force of the album is.ing infectious. The production is just phenomenal- crisp, clear drums; sonic blips and bloops that are playful but not cheesy; and the bass, my god, the bass.

Why does this have better low-end than essentially any hip-hop record I can think of? I really like the sequencing in this version, so it's kind of cool that I never experienced what I guess was one that the band itself wasn't happy with.
